Tigertrap: Christmas Party

I went to the Tigertrap Christmas party at Bloomsbury bowling lanes on Sat and finally got to see Untitled Musical Project, Irish Rockers Clone Quartet, Infants and Wojtek Godzisz. The venue was great; I felt like i’d been transported back to the 1950’s, it was super retro, Happy days style !!! They only sold one type of beer and cheap white Russians, so you can imagine the state everyone was in by the end of the evening.

1st up was bearded lunatic Wojtek Godzisz who was very entertaining, thrashing around the stage, screaming his face off, shaking his mop of hair round whilst making a shit load of noise….The Moon and The Yew Tree sounds like Tom Waits covering The Arcade Fire, I love the primal sounding verse / drum beat with those bellowing vocals, a trait for which Wojtek has become known for over here in the UK. No Place Like Home and Lies reminds me of The Stills (1st album), I’m not sure why but i think it’s something to do with the melancholy tones. Overall it was a very impressive set and we were treated to a few new songs (Beltane) which warmed us up nicely.

I’ve been wanting to see Untitled Musical Project for as long as I can remember and I finally got to see em. The singer reminds me of a young Paul Weller crossed with Johnny Rotten. The guy must have 1000 demons inside him; he looked totally possessed at points, really psychotic…see picture…I fuckin loved em.

If you haven’t heard these guys yet, they play really frantic punk rock, similar to Mclusky or the Beastie Boys (Check yr head era).

I love the way the singer fits loads of lyrics into his songs and then spits em out in a really menacing way. Which is funny, because between tracks they were really pleasant and super nice, it’s always the quiet and unassuming types that go mental when they’re on stage, hee hee. I think these guys are one of the best bands in Britain at the moment !!!

Clone Quartet’s album ‘Well-Oiled Machine’ has been getting serious plays on my ipod the last few weeks. They sound like a cross between Weezer and Desaparecidos with noodly keyboard madness. The singer sounds similar to Conor Oberst, it was good to hear the dancy tracks Carousel and Won’t Somebody Please…hmm maybe that’s why my legs are aching today? They put on a great show, but by this point people were getting very drunk so I’m not sure they had everyone’s full attention.

Infants were brilliant and managed to scare half the bowling fraternity to death with their sonic mix of ram shackled electronic, thrashing rock. They took to the stage wearing some strange head gear, which got a few heads turning and the keyboard player spent most of the set jumping about the stage dressed all Christmassy! By this point, I was pretty trashed so I can’t really remember much, although they did play the Infants Firetruk theme which got me going mental !!!

Overall it was a great evening, big thanks Tigertrap Records, check em out….they’ve got a great roster of bands !!!

Mp3s
Wojtek Godzisz - Time of the wolf
Untitled Musical Project - The a minor pentatonic scale
Infants - Infants Firetruk theme
