Pocus Whitefaceare a three piece from London who make really good discordant, awkward, thrashy post rock. They sound similar to bands like Mclusky or Ikara Colt and luckily for us, you can download their excellent ep A Watch Means Conditions Are Favourable for free !!!
They've also got a fair few downloads on their website .
The Tate Modern has invited musicians to write a song about any piece of art that hangs on their walls. The winner will have their track showcased on some headphones in front of the piece of art. Kotki Dwa has written a song for Le Beau Charcutier
When i was a kid, everyone at school supported Liverpool football team.
Anyway, Liverpoolhas given us The Beatles, The Boo Radleys, Cast, The Christians, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Farm, Flock of Seagulls, The Coral, Shack, The Zutons, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Icicle Works, The La's, Ladytron, Lightning Seeds, Space and The Teardrop Explodes....so here's the new breed of Liverpudlian bands.
Elle s'appelle
This wonderful 3 piece make keyboard led, danceable indie rock. They remind me of bands like The Chalets, Mates of State, Das Wanderlust or The Research. It’s really poppy, fun and quirky stuff. The keyboards sound like something outta a fairground or circus ride.
‘Little Flame’ is a brilliant track, it’s so bloody catchy…I really like the break down bit in the middle to. The melodies are simple yet extremely effective.
I never could say She Sells Sea Shells over and over again…but this song is helping me. This track is slightly more experimental sounding with really good boy/girl shared vocals…not a million miles away from Matt and Kim.
Marippa sounds like a lost Queen track….Andy (Bass) sings it and sounds like Freddy Mercury..bloody awesome ! They’ve described their sound as Hyperactive Nursery Rhymes, which I’d av to agree with.
If you're a regular to this blog, you will know that i'm obsessed with bands like this. Yes, bands that makes 90s sounding American indie rock...I simply can't get enough of em and luckily for me, there's a whole host of UK bands making a similar noise.
Thing i really like about this band, is the fragile voice of singer Nick, he sounds like he's got the world on his shoulders, like a million problems he'll never be able to solve. Like the way Daniel Johnston or Conor Oberst conveys emotion, sorta intimite.
Musically i'd say these guys are somewhere between the Get Up Kids (Part 1 A Captain) and Death Cab For Cutie. Although, they have moments when they sound like The Replacements or Ted Leo, especially in the super track Crash Hams.
If you like bands like Wilco / The Broken Family band or anything remotely Americana, then you'll love these guys. They make really warm acoustic driven songs. Singer Dave Williams sounds like a cross between Neil Young and the guy from My Morning Jacket....Kathleenis such a great song, real heart string puller...nice mandolin action and a killer chorus.
I wasn't going to include these guys, as they've had a fair amount of attention already...but seeing as i played them on my first ever podcast here i feel like i should menion em. They are one of Liverpools most up and coming young bands and are doing pretty damn well.
The Wombats make really melodic, poppy indie rock in the same way that Supergrass did all those years ago. They've got great lyrics filled with bitter humour and interesting tales about disco's (Backfire @ The Disco), strippers (Patricia The Stripper) and ex girlfriends who are getting married.
I love the lyric in My First Wedding:
Things would be fantastic if me and the bride didn't have a past, So i stand by the buffet and emerse myself in brie
They're debut album 'A guide to love, loss and desperation' is released on 28th October.(Pre Order here)
I'm probably gonna do another post about this band cause they are currently recording a new demo. The two tracks on their myspace page are live, but sound really good. Weekend is a really short track with Sleater Kinney / Cap n Jazz style guitars and carefree vocals. I like the fact that this song is short and sweet, it's non complicated, just sounds honest. Reminds me of los Campesinos or Sky Larkin.
I'm really looking forward to hearing their new demo, they'll defo be back on this blog !
Wave Machines make me wanna drive round in an open top car by the sea in Spain or France. Their music reminds me of holidays, of escaping grey old London…of diving into pools with sun beams warming my face etc.. (God, maybe I need a holiday).
The Greatest Escape We EverMade is a perfect slice of bubbling / floaty electronica with low key vocals, similar to Fujiya and Miyagi, Gorillaz or Hot Chip. I love the way the bass creeps in and out of the track, leaving the acoustic guitar and high pitch vocals to get us through the excellent chorus.
Their other tracks are less electronic and more band orientated, My Punk Spirit has got some great, honest lyrics, whilst Slow Decade is a lovely acoustic track with nice harmonies / whistling and intimite vocals. Oh, and I Joined The Union is great ! Super high, Bee Gees style vocals, check it out on their myspace page.
These chaps remind me of a band called Stapleton, they're music is really sweet and melancholy. I like the singers voice, reminds me of Death Cab For Cutie or REM. On The Return has got a really nice guitar riff, with some nice female backing vocals and keyboard action similar to American Analog Set / Pinback.
My favourite track is Favourite Films, it bops along like a lost Lemonheads track and has the same vibe as 80s band Firehouse, i love it.
I love this bands quirky sense of humour, their pics on myspace are dead funny. Nature's Symphony is a short folky track about fishin / grasshopers / woodpeckers / birds and trees etc...it's a really sweet song. The Lost Horizon sounds like something The Akron Family would do, it sounds like a sea shanty, similar to The Coral. Good stuff !!!
I'm not sure why this band haven't received any attention in the UK. They seem to have all the right ingredients to do well. Modern Romancer is reminicent of bands like The Cribs / The View, it's really catchy. But for me Take Your time is a definete HIT, it's basically upbeat, jangaly lad rock...but cocky in the same sorta way the Arctic Monkeys are...super shiat !!!
Like The Wombats, this band have had a really successful last year, having released a number of excellent singles and a debut album, they've done pretty well. If you haven't heard em yet, they make frantic, start-stopping songs, with fiddly guitar lines, random song titles and 3 piece harmonies. They sound like The Futureheads crossed with a more melodic version of the Minutemen.
Man, i can't wait to hear some new stuff by these guys, they seem to have taken their other tracks off their myspace page, but have left 'Forever on The Edge'. They're influenced by all those 90s American indie bands i continually obsess over...Built to Spill, Pavement, Sebadoh, Trumans Water, Archers of Loaf etc....Infact they do a really good cover of a Guided By Voices track if you ever see em live.
'Forever on The Edge' is like the English equivalent of Pavements 'Cut Your Hair'. It sounds nothin like it, but has that same sorta slacker / jangaly mid paced feel. The lyrics are great to:
'I'm only Scraping by, Tesco value till i die, Forever on the edge, Sainsburys basics till i'm dead'. (Oh, if your not from the UK, Tesco and Sainsburys are supermarkets and the value and basics range is the really cheap crapy shit)
The band are going on tour during the month of October, so if they hit your town, make sure you check em out, they're ace !!!
This album was released a while ago, but I keep listening to ‘A Rush and a Push and The Land Is Ours’that Wojtek Godzisz covered for a really good Smiths tribute album called 'Nineteen Eighty Seven'. The album came out on Filthy Little Angels and you can download all the tracks here.
Wojtek Godzisz has got another ep called 'The Moon and The Yew Tree'coming out within the next few months, you can listen to some of his new stuff on his myspacepage. Or watch him recording stuff here. The Moon And The Yew Tree
OMG, this band are the best thing I’ve heard in ages !!!
It’s times like this that I want to go buy Tim Berners Lee (Inventor of the internet) a fuckin drink. If it wasn’t for him or blogger (so that’s a drink for the google guys) I would never have heard about this band, or a whole host of others for that matter. Infact i really need to buy the guy from Cable & Tweed blog a drink, cause he turned me onto this lot, so thanks !!!
Anyway, Black kids are my new favourite band…they hail from Jacksonville Florida and make super catchy, keyboard, dancy, indie soul. They are SO good, stupidly GOOD....Hit The Heart Brakes has got such a super guitar sound (like the one Rod Stewart used on 'Do ya think i'm sexy')...it reminds me of early Prince or a track off Purple Rain or something. It makes me wanna dance, it makes me wanna go back to 1984 to the roller disco.
I love the playful vocals between singer Reggie Youngblood and the two girls Dawn and Ali....they have really kooky voices....it's bubblegum pop.
Reggie Youngbloods voice is pretty sultry, he conveys emotion in the same way that Robert Smith does. The chorus of Hit The Heart Brakes really stomps along, shaking booty like a motown floor shaker....it's great great great !!!
I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To DanceWith You is a blatant hit if you ask me...man if these guys come over to the UK they'll be massive. The track is filled with flowing keyboards, shout back vocals and a chorus to die for.
Basically when i listen to this band i feel like an excited little child, this band conjure up strange, uplifting emotions in me...i dunno what it is, but they have some sorta magic..check these tracks out...they might turn you into a bumbling wreck like me !!!
I’ve been listening to The Total Drop for the last year or so and featured their song ‘Words Escape Me’ on my top tunes for 2006. Since then they’ve released a number of singles on Snakes and Ladders Records, the wonderful ‘Your Excellency’ and their last single ‘Nuit America’.
Their sound is definitely influenced by such new wave / art rock bands as Blondie and Television. Although some of their stuff is also reminiscent of more indie stuff like The Sea Urchins or Love is all.
Singer (Anna) has a really great voice, her style is fairly unique, I guess the nearest person she sounds like is Aggi from 80s band The Shop Assistants or Amelia Fletcher from Talulah Gosh.
The band hail from New Cross and play round London all the time, so if your in town, make sure you check em out !!!
Over the years Manchesterhas given us so many excellent bands, namely The Fall, Smiths, Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Oasis, James, The Stone Roses, The Verve, Happy Mondays, The Charlatans and Inspiral Carpets. They had one of the best clubs in the world (The Hacienda), one of the best labels (Factory Records) and they're all mad for it !!!
Tony Wilsonsadly passed away recently, so this is my tribute to him !!!
Carlis Star
This band make optimistic, fuzzy, summery indie rock. They sound like a cross between Teenage Fanclub/Granddaddy, with the youthful exuberance of Ash when err...they were abit younger, 1977 style.
Break For It has got excellent Beach Boys harmonies, whilst single Hereby No One reminds me of The Dandy Warhols, it's a perfect summer anthem. These guys are playing The Leeds festival next weekend, so if your going, make sure you check em out, they'll be rockin !!!
These guys are really cool, they do a great cover of 'Hip To Be Square' by Huey Lewis and The News....i like the talking bit in the middle of the song..Manchester accents are brilliant, maybe Stephen Ruffian (singer) could be the norths answer to Eddie Argos.
Death of a Band is a super track, sounds like The Fall/Art Brut having a fight with Franz Ferdinand !!!
The band are currently working on some new tracks for compilations on FLA and Cherryade Records. Their album is currently out on Filthy Little Angels (Buy). Oh, thanks for the tip Mr Polaroid !!
WFANFC are seriously underrated in the UK, for some reason they haven't been fully recognized !!!
They've got what i consider to be the Manchester sound, low key vocals, baggy beats, interesting guitar licks and lots of melody...to say that these guys are a shoegaze band would be an understatement...they manage to encapsulate alot of different sounds in their style. There's bits of psychedelia, krautrock, atmospheric electronica, instrumental soundscapes and sweet rock n roll.
They basically sound like a cross between The Stone Roses and Spiritulised, which is a pretty decent mix if you ask me !!! (Buy)
The excellently named 'Hot Banana Wave'is this bands new single and it's great !!!! They've got a really experimental sound that reminds me of James Chance and the Contortions or The Birthday Party. The singer plays an array of instruments including the Sax which is prominent throughout the track 'Snakes'. A brilliant post punk, ranting mess...super good !!!
All of this ladys recordings are done on a 4 track, why bother with a studio when you can make music in yr own flat...Army of One is gonna be one of my favourite tracks of this year...it's a low fi gem...sounds like Pj Harvey messin with early REM, Erase Errata or Throwing Muses. The track Intuition is super good to !!! The other 2 tracks on her myspace page are a little more experimental, Hotel LL is pretty cool...reminded me of Scout Niblett.
The Answering Machine have been recieving lots of blog love this year. They seem to be doing pretty well over here in the UK and have a knack for making the same sort of melodic sound as bands like The Wombatsand fellow MancuniansPolytechnic.
Their last single 'Silent Hotel' is a jangaly indie rock ballad, with programed drum beats similar to The Radio Debt, melencholy lyrics and shout back vocals similar to Los Campesinos.
First single 'Oklahoma' is my favourite track, it skips along like a lost Strokes tune, it's under 2mins and is perfect for any indie disco !!! (Buy)
To me, this band sound somewhere between The Magic Numbers and the La's....they've got really good catchy choruses and some of the vocals remind of bands like The Zutons / Coral. It's basically quirky, upbeat indie pop, 'If It Gonna Happen Now' is a great tune, with it's odd synth sounds, excellent harmonies and super catchy chorous !!!
Magic Arm (Marc Rigelsford) likes to stay in most evenings and watch the moon !!! This gives him all the inspiration he needs to write chillingly beautiful acoustic songs. His debut Ep Outdoor Games ranges from twisted psych-folk to sinister pop and austere electronica. (Buy)
The Sorry Kisses are a little bit of a super group, this band includes the singer of Nine Black Alps, the singer song writer Hayley Hutchinson and Ex Giant Drag Drummer Micah Calabrese. I love their sound, it's really 90s, like Juliana Hatfield or Liz Phair. I'm a real sucker for this kinda indie rock....
These guys make classic sounding west coast style, psychedelic, country infused rock. Single Stars is a breezy, summery tune, filled with fuzzy guitars and cheerful, care free vocals. Their biog states that they are influenced by such artists as The Nazz, Elephant 6 Collective and The Wizard Of Oz. So I guess that sums their sound up good and proper !!!
There’s something genuinely exciting about these lads from Middlesbrough. First of all, their name is brilliant !!! Secondly, their music is raw and still in the embrionic stage..it's nice to hear a bands demo's before the songs are polished up. You can tell they've got a million musical ideas and are still trying to find their sound..which is a good thing.
Maybe this is why i'm so into the 10 free tracks they've hosted....at the moment they switch from jerky pop (xtc style) to melodic post rock...to garagy surf rock similar to Man Or Astroman.
Demo 1 and demo 2 on their myspace page is abit more straight ahead, introspective rock....Demo 1 is a really great track with the memorable lyric 'I've been Dreaming I can dance, I've never been anywhere, I've Been Sleeping On My Hands'.
They've done a session for Mark Riley which you can hear on their myspace page and they've released a 7inch single called WhatsThe Miles Per Gallon, Alan? (Buy) on Grace Records.
So check em out...they might just steal your brain !!!
On my travels through the world of myspace i stumbled across this great 3 piece band. They hail from London and sound like The Raincoats / The Slits etc....I think they're supporting The Gossip round Europe, so expect to see alot more of these cats !!!
I really like their track Send A Delegate..it's super cool !!!
Anyway, this album is a joyful noise fest of drums / bass mixed with crazy samples and drum machine beats...i love the samples they use inbetween songs with people yelling and swearing. They seem to interspursed live songs with recorded ones..which makes for an interesting sound!!
River Phoenix is fast becoming track of the year for me...he didn't mean it ya know....
Sheffieldhas given us the Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, Def Leppard, Joe Cocker, Richard Hawley, The Longpigs, Warp records and synth pop. So here's a few more to add to the list:
Slow Down Tallahassee
I played these girls a couple of months ago on one of my podcasts and have had the single 'So much for love' on constant repeat. It's got a really nice 60's girl group feel, they've got that whole garage / motown thing down to a T. (Buy)
These guys last single ' Traditional Music' has been firmly stuck in my brain for the last few days, it sounds like The Horrors being fronted by Jello Biafra and it kicks arse !!! They look fairly glamed up, so i'd imagine this lot would be interesting live.
I like snotting punk, I like fast and furious music, I like fuzzy bass noises and thrashy drums, I like it when guitar players turn their amps up to 11, so singers have to scream to be heard. So it's no suprise that i like this !!!
These guys sound really pissed off and wound up, it’s fast paced disjointed, punk rock…been a while since I’ve heard a uk band sound so melodic whilst aggressive at the same time….if you like the Buzzcocks or Gang of Four you should like this. They have a mini album out now called 'You Took A Scythe Home'.
Naavy are the perfect combination of two boys and two girls making a new wave racket. Their sound is remenicent of bands like the Yummy Fur, The Slits and The Fall. They have a 4 track ep coming out soon on white vinyl through Angular Records.
There seems to be alot of bands from Sheffield who sound somewhere between The Fall and Half Man Half Busicuit. This scary lot are no exception and make rather dense sounding, punky art rock. Grab their last single 'My Baby's into Witchcraft'here.
This band definitely have something special, they have a knack for making sweet, ghostly, indie folk...similar to US band The InnocenceMission. Nat Johnson (Singer) has one of the warmest voices i've heard in recent years...think Mary Lorson...with a hint of Vashti Bunyan. The music and intrumentation is very playfull and the glockenspiels, viloins and recorders adds to it's loveliness.
Marcy from Lost in your inboxturned me on to this guy. His bio says that he started out as a busker, playing anywhere and everywhere. His music resembles such artists as Beck, Ween and the Flamming Lips....he's got a super voice, there's a real hazy / summery feel to his last album Afterlife. It's a big melting pop of acoustic, psych, country tinged Americana, but with enough experimentation to make it sound lo-fi…apparently he recorded the album in his loft, I guess this adds to the records intimacy.
Through my searches I kept coming across The Sheffield Phonographic Corporation. It seems like every band I like is signed to them. Anyway, this lot are on their label and they make a bloody good racket…I love the track ‘Fall Statistics’. They are obviously influenced by TheFall and sound similar to bands like Gallon Drunk / Man or Astroman and Half Man HalfBiscuit. They’ve done a couple of singles and should have an album out later this year !!!
I really like this lot…there’s plenty of variety in their sound. Imagine a lo-fi version of the Cardigans crossed with The Cribs and your half way there. Their new single ‘Tornado’ is filled with summery excitement, boy/girl shared vocals with a really nice guitar sound. Stove is a great track to, check it out !!!
These lads have had a fair amount of attention already and have been championed by the likes of Steve Lamacq and xfm etc…they are similar to bands like Good Shoes, Bloc Party and Dartz, they’re sound is very melodic so I can imagine these guys will do well…..you can download their xfm session here.
This weeks theme for the Contrast podcast has been chosen by myself. The idea for the podcast was to make a mix cd, send it to another blogger, with a postcard from your local area. Then pick your favourite track off the cd and send it with your intro to the wonderful Tim over at Contrast !!!
I sent a really dodgy postcard and a mix of cool stuff to Marcy from the excellent blog Lost in your inbox, here's the track list.
Big thanks to Fil from the super blog Pogo A Go-Go, he sent me a great mix, loved all the Canadian garage rock / power pop bands on it, super shiat !!! Oh and he managed to make the most of an 80min cd by fitting 27 tracks on it !!!
Next up is Englands second biggest city Birmingham, the birth place of Heavy Metal, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Napalm Death of course !!!
Captain Polaroid
Stop hiding !!! I couldn't find any pictures of this band...i think it's just one guy actually. He's described his music us fuzzy, personal, political, noisy, quiet, edgy, melancholic indie lo-fi pop. Which hits the nail on the head really, if you like Sebadoh, The Wedding Present or Graham Coxon, then you'll like this. His new album is out on the excellent label Filthy Little Angels.
Really good 3 piece who've been knocking around blog land for a while now, i'd put them in the same league as bands like Sky Larkin / Los Campesinos and Distophia...Sofacore is a super track with bendy guitar strings / boy girl shared vocals with an early Idlewild feel, i love it !! They've done a couple of cool vids to !!
If you ever get the opportunity to see this band live, go see em. They put on a great show with Erotic Volvowandering around in that weird costume thing. There's 8 of em in the band so things get pretty hectic on stage !! They're music is an uplifting mix of quirky, eccentric psychedelic pop...if the characters from 'The Magic Round About' formed a band, this is what they'd sound like, it's humorous stuff.
More low-fi stuff from a one man musical outfit called Little Dipper (i think he has a backing band, but by the pic it looks like he just uses his drum machine). Anyway i've just found out about this guy and i love his stuff. Title track on his myspace page 'Touch Me Test Me' is a really great melancholic, early 90's sounding indie gem. In an ideal world this track would be massive !!! Reminds me of Ride, Clearlake, Boo Radleys or TC Hug...if you can remember them...
This noisy lot make jerky, shouty, energetic, punk rock....they sound like a cross between Fugazi, Minutemen and Hot Club De Paris. Alot of whats going on here is very rhythmical, i like the jazzy guitar chords and shout back vocals between members. They've got a fair amount of mp3s on their website, so go check em out !!!
Crap picture i know...these guys are really cool..they remind me of another uk band called Punish The Atom(RIP) and make abrasive punk rock similar to bands like Mclusky and The Jesus Lizard. Good riffs, wailing guitars and distorted vocals, just how i like it !!!
These lads are on the mighty Tigertraplabel and have had a fair amount of attention in the UK. Their music is pretty frantic, stimulants ago-go, fast, in your face punk rock. I like the singers voice, he hardly takes breaths between words and spits em out as if he's having a heart attack.
The Big Bangare a group of men with green eyes, they play the devils music and make full on swamp rockin n roll...do you like Jon Spencer / 80's Matchbox Disaster or the ModeyLemon..well if so...you'll fuckin love this !!!
Distophia
I wrote about these chaps recentlyhere. I've loved this band for SO long and just realised that they're from Birmingham, listen to these 2 tracks and you'll be hooked !!!
What's wrong with me? I seem to be on a constant quest for finding out about new music, i think i have some kinda disorder (indie nerd disorder / obscure band disorder / relentless mp3disorder). Anyway, i fuckin love it...and i'm so grateful to all the wonderful blogs that turn me on to new shiat etc....
Gimme Tinnitusis a constant source for pointing me in the right direction...recently he posted an mp3 by 'Shepherdess'. Who may have just become my new favourite band, check em out !!!
I'm not sure if i'm gonna keep this up, but i'm planning on doing some posts for bands from all 56 different cities in UK....this is a momentus tast and abit of a stupid one...but we'll see how it pans out.
1st up is Norwich...a city which is sometimes over looked when it comes to bands....no big bands have ever hailed from Norwich, but they're indie scene is pretty healthy...so here's my list !!!
Giant Robot And The City Of Tokyo
Ooohhh, i love this...reminiscent of bands like Pavement, Urusei Yatsura, Archers Of Loaf and Built To Spill etc....early 90s sound...they're a wee bit like Distophia, which is no bad thing !!! Erosion is my favourite track, good low-fi indie shiat !!!! They've got a new record out at the moment so go buy it here!!! Members of this band are also in: Master Solo, Tell Me How and Cruiser Chimps.
Six piece Bearsuithave been around for a while and are one of the more well known bands from Norwich. They have a whole host of eccentric instruments in their live shows and make odd, start stoppy, waltzy poppy indie punk. So basically, they sound pretty chaotic, managing to bridge the gap between Belle and Sebastian/ Huggy Bear...if you can imagine. Best thing to do is to av a listen !!! They've got a new record out on Fantastic Plastic records so check it out !!!
I’m really gutted I missed this guy at the latitude festival. He’s one of the cities best singer song writers. His voice is lovely, really sweet, slightly jazzy…not a million miles away from people like Darren Hayman or Richard Hawley. So far he’s put out a few singles and has done a split 7inch with Hoofaswhich you can buy here. His debut album is coming out on Series 8 Recordsvery soon !!!
Le Tetsuoare a really good (boy/girl shared vocals) snotty 3 piece who make 2 minute shouty punk pop gems. If you're into bands like Erase Errata, Shellac and Help She Can't Swim i'm sure you'll dig em...They've put a couple of eps out, the last one was released on HowlbackHum.
Kunk
Every town needs a band like this, no messing about, just full on rock !!! Similar to bands like the Pixies / Foo Fighters and Jetplane Landing they kick out melodic grungy rock. They have a new single 'We're Not Who You Think We Are' coming out in October here!!!
I like bands that wear uniforms when they play live. As you can see, this lot wear lab coats and fiddle around with odd keyboards etc... they describe their sound as lo-fi pop, downbeat and experimental electronica in the vein of Grandaddy!!! Oh, and they like Daniel Johnston, so they get my vote !!!
Oooohh, i'm so hooked on 'Everybodys Dancing' (Buy), such a choon !!! It sounds like DavidBurn sitting on Yarmouth beach with his casio keyboard in the height of summer !!! The band also features Andrew from local indie heroes Magoo, great great great !!!
So if Damon Albarn messed about with his nintendo too much, this is what it'd sound like. They've been given the tag 'Pink Floyd for the nintendo generation' and make 8-Bit, gameboy indie rock. That description sounds dodgy i know, but listen to 'The Early Sheets' and you'll be hooked...fans of The Rentals should like this.
Ok, so Magoo have been around since 1992 and are probably the most well known band to come outta Norwich. John Peel loved em and gave them alot of airplay etc..They make psyche-tinged alt.rock and are somewhere between The Flaming Lips and Stereolab. They're new album, 'The All Electric Amusement Arcade' is out on Series 8 Records.Buy it !!
This bearded gentlemen describes himself as Norfolk's answer to Woody Guthrie. His music is fairly rural sounding, Americana for English folk...acoustic led tracks with good use of pots n pans percussion and accordians. If you like The Broken Family Band or Bonnie Prince Billy you will defo like this. 'Watchtower Blues' is a great track !!!
I'm guessing that this band have already made it into most bloggers consciousness, but nevertheless i feel like i must post something about The Virginscause they're so great !!!
Fellow JGIR writer Butterhead got me into these guys and it's his birthday today, infact it happens to be our blogaversary !!!
So to celebrate, check this track out and crank it up !!!
The Marzipan Manlives in a damp forest somewhere in the south west of England, he lives under the roots of a big tree, sharing his home with two rabbits, he usually never comes out and stays in all day writing songs and stories.
